Address: Vung Bau Bay, Phu Quoc island, Vietnam
Bamboo Cottages is a family project. We are a 17-room Vietnamese family-run getaway. In 2009, we started building Bamboo Cottages with the simple, idealistic objective of sharing more of what we value with others. We are a Vietnamese-American family who has owned the land where the cottages are now situated for many years. The building that houses the restaurant used to be our vacation home. We chose this out-of-the way spot for its serenity and beauty.
Moreover, we hope that earnings generated from the cottages and restaurant will help us expand and evolve our family’s long-running scholarship program for needy children in Phu Quoc and Saigon. The Phung Su Foundation (“Together We Serve”) is based in Houston, Texas and provides educational scholarships to disadvantaged youth in Vietnam who would otherwise have to work. Together We Serve started in 2004 and has enabled approximately 75 grade and middle school students to remain in school or go back to school by providing their families with book, uniform and school fees, as well as a “stipend” that covers roughly what the child would have earned doing menial labor were he or she not in school. We hope that Bamboo Cottages will become a reliable source of funds for the scholarships as well as other educational projects we aspire to realize in the long-term.
Bamboo Cottages adheres to a strict eco-conscious business model: no air-conditioning, electricity only from 8 p.m. to midnight and no Wi-Fi during mealtimes. This 17-room property sits along private beachfront on Vung Bau Bay. Although only a couple of the cottages are actually on the beach, all have sea views and each has a terrace and beach chairs. All rooms have private, open-air baths with solar-heated shower.
The restaurant serves fresh seafood and organically grown vegetables, and mealtimes are set. You’ll forgo luxuries at this rustic retreat, but you can rent a motorbike or kayak to explore. Plus, profits help keep young children in school.
